Although prestigious international and national human rights organizations, have issued several reports about well-documented human rights violations in the Ogaden and elsewhere in Ethiopia by the current Ethiopian government, the international community has remained tight?lipped about those violations for the last fourteen years.
Victims of human rights abuses and their relatives have been warned not to speak of their experiences to anyone, especially to the International Humanitarian Organisations, which operate in some parts of the region, or else they would be severely punished.
As the case is with all OHRC’s reports, this report provides a detailed documentation of the specific human rights violations that the Somali population in the Ogaden are subjected to on a daily basis.

In May it published an open letter to participants at the conference on the formation of a national human rights commission and an ombudsman's office, calling for these to be empowered to conduct independent and impartial investigations into human rights violations.
In June Ethiopia began mass arrests and deportations to Eritrea of men, women and children of full or part Eritrean origin, most of whom had been born in Ethiopia or had worked there as citizens prior to Eritrea achieving independence from Ethiopia in 1991.
When war with Eritrea broke out in May, Amnesty International appealed to the Ethiopian government to respect the Geneva Conventions and not target civilians.

Ethiopia's international standing grew during the year as its strategic location, bordering Sudan and Somalia, made it a "frontline state" in the U.S.-led "war against terrorism." The U.S. provided substantial military assistance to Ethiopia within this context.

They visited two rural areas to investigate allegations of election-related human rights violations - the Amhara Region (East Gojjam zone), where two members of an opposition party had recently been killed by local government militias, and the Southern Region (Hadiya and Wolaita zones), where there were reports of arrests and intimidation of opposition members.
