IHS :: HNN :: HumanLight is Dec. 23
For people who base their thinking about life's deepest questions on evidence, logic, and science, HumanLight is an occasion to gather and honor a humanist conception of hope, goodwill, and caring for others.
The reaction of participants to the first HumanLight celebration, which took place in New Jersey in 2001, was strongly positive and emotional.
As word of HumanLight spread, celebrations were held at over a dozen locations around the country in 2003, accompanied by an increase in the public's awareness of humanists and humanist ideals.

 Secular Seasons
HumanLight is a celebration of humanist values: tolerance, compassion, empathy, honesty, free inquiry, reason and rationality, and more.
A critical objective was to be part of the peak celebration time of the holiday season, yet to have a distinct date of our own that did not coincide exactly (and thus interfere) with other holidays such as the Winter Solstice, Christmas, or Kwanzaa.
We wanted Humanists at family gatherings and other holiday social events to be able to say "Happy Holidays" and mean it; to have a positive, constructive way to start a conversation in which they could explain to loved ones what Humanism is about.

Ron’s Blog / Festivus for the rest of us   (Site not responding. Last check: )
HumanLight is a holiday made up pretty much for people like us: Humanists who don’t want to play along with the Xmas shit, but for some reason (likely kid-related) feel the need to embrace a celebration of winter rather than simply (as I have for my whole adult life) enjoying the sense of stepping outside.
We considered making a big deal over the solstice instead, since it’s got an actual tradition and all; and HumanLight certainly steals some solstice stuff (as Xmas did before it), but in the end, it was a little wicca-ish.
HumanLight was started by a bunch of humanists just a couple of years ago; and the first real celebration was in 2002 in Jersey.
