Northern League (Italy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In February 2006, the Northern League announced that it had reached an agreement with the Movement for Autonomy, a brand-new centrist party of Southern Italy led by MEP and President of the Province of Catania Raffaele Lombardo.
The league has been often criticised, in Italy and abroad, for being too similar to a fascist party, having also organised a paramilitary group of "green shirts" (which carry no weapons).
In June 2005, at a festival organised by the League, a banner inciting to "rape Pecoraro", (Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, secretary of the Federation of the Greens and openly bisexual) was exposed; the banner caused outcry, and was condemned by the League's leadership

[Genocide/1971] Nicholas Wheeler: "India as rescuer? Humanitarian Intervention in International Society"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
However, the use of the word 'confederation' by Awami League negotiators to describe their position on the role of East Pakistan in the constitution was perceived by the military as evidence of the League's secessionist ambitions.
In seeking to justify India's intervention on humanitarian grounds, Ambassador Sen argued that the 'military repression' in East Pakistan was on a sufficient scale to 'shock the conscience of mankind'.
Although India's intervention was not motivated by primarily humanitarian reasons, it counts as a humanitarian one, because (in addition to meeting the requirements of necessity and proportionality) the security reasons that led it to intervene and the means employed did not undermine the humanitarian benefits of the intervention.

 Humanitarian League
Salt was General Secretary, Editor and founder of the League and the League's Journal from 1891 to 1920.
The Humanitarian League has been established to enforce the principle that it is iniquitous to inflict avoidable suffering on any sentient being.
In brief, the distinctive purpose of the Humanitarian League is to consolidate and give consistent expression to the principle of humaneness, and to show that Humanitarianism is not merely a kindly sentiment, a product of the heart rather than of the brain, but an essential portion of any intelligible system of ethics or social science.

Is Humanitarian Aid Serving the Needy? (updated: 010104)
Corresponding League guarantees focused on related "obligations of international concern" (4) which were incurred by League members as a condition of their joining the League.
Some writers (6) suggest that minority protection obligations put in place at the time of the League could perhaps be a means of reinforcing UN resolutions and that certain relevant treaties and obligations under the League should be considered as remaining valid.
If humanitarian aid is to be provided reliably and effectively, we must seek to universalize the rights of man. The question is how to champion individual human rights without encouraging unjustified violation of national sovereignty by outside powers or cutting across age-old spiritual and social values.

The Secret of the League - Ernest Bramah
He was in point of fact a policeman, and from a thong on his wrist swung a truncheon, while the butt of a revolver showed at his belt.
Its plot is developed rather patchily, and like most warning novels, was overtaken by real events and didn't come true — or in the long perspective, we may feel that much of it eventually came true after all, and quite unfortunately.
The Secret of the League is not too strong economically, and perhaps the greatest weakness of the plot is that Bramah does not really show how the Unity League proselytizers convince and recruit the key members — a vital aspect of Atlas Shrugged.
