Humanitarian crisis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A humanitarian crisis (or "humanitarian disaster") is an event or series of events which represents a critical threat to the health, safety, security or wellbeing of a community or other large group of people, usually over a wide area.
An ongoing or lingering pandemic may also amount to a humanitarian crisis, especially where there are increasing levels of virulence, or rates of infection as in the case of AIDS or bird flu.
Recent humanitarian crises include the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, and the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.

This means that humanitarian actors should not take sides and should be free from political influence so they can go after their objectives single-mindedly – to impartially help people based solely on criteria of need.
Humanitarian action is supposed to be an expression of hope and humanity in times of darkness – crossing borders and serving victims on both sides, to show even parties at war can care for humanity while fighting their war.
And many humanitarian programs are also on standby – withholding vital lifesaving assistance – in many other countries of the world where local populations perceive humanitarian assistance to be part of a Western action that they do not approve of.

The UN Oil-for-Food Program, established in 1996, has helped avert a famine and potentially more devastating humanitarian conditions but it cannot and was not designed to meet the entire needs of all the Iraqi people.
Epidemics and famine, new refugee flows, massive casualties, destruction of civilian infrastructure, a dramatic rise in physical and mental disabilities from the use of various kinds of weapons, and major environmental damage are just a few of the probable consequences.
