The son of a butcher, Gonzalez was born March 25, 1966 in Netzahualcoyotl, Mexico.
In an 11 year professional career, Gonzalez reigned three times as WBC junior flyweight champion, once as IBF champion and registered 12 successful title defenses.
On June 25, 1989 Gonzalez won the WBC junior flyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Yul Woo Lee in Korea.
