The Humboldt Park Line was built in 1895 by the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad Company, Chicago's third elevated company and the first to use electric traction.
The Humboldt Park branch opened to a temporary terminal at the intermediate point of Lawndale Avenue, far from the intended goal of 72nd (Harlem) Avenue, on July 29.
The section of the Humboldt Park branch west of Oakley was scrapped very quickly, but a three block stub between the Logan Square branch and Oakley Avenue remained for several years, along with the shuttle platform, although the connecting catwalk was removed.
