Hummel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
Hummel was born in Pressburg (what is now Bratislava, which is only about an hour from Vienna), which was at that point part of the Austrian Empire; he was, therefore, Austrian, as was Weidinger, and worked largely in Vienna, as did Weidinger.
Hummel was, therefore, likely very familiar with Weidinger's instrument; let us not forget that while the Haydn was written in 1796, it was not premiered until 1800.
Weidinger was continually experimenting with his instrument and tried several keys before his death, and Dahlqvist, in his monograph on Weidinger, states that the lower tessitura of the Hummel (as low notes are easier to produce on a higher instrument) suggests that Weidinger had a new instrument, perhaps with a wider bore.

Hummel was taught and housed by Mozart for two years free of charge and made his first concert appearance at the age of nine, at one of Mozart's concerts.
This is unsurprising, considering that Chopin must have heard Hummel on one of Hummel's concert tours to Poland and Russia, and that Chopin kept Hummel's piano concertos in his active repertoire.
Although Hummel died famous, with a lasting posthumous reputation apparently secure, his music was quickly forgotten at the onrush of the Romantic period, perhaps because his classical ideas were seen as old-fashioned.

Sleeve Notes - Classical Trumpet Concertos
Composers such as Bach stretched the capabilities of the ‘natural’ instrument to its furthest regions and, as the Baroque era came to its end, players began to experiment with instruments that could provide a wider range of notes, and especially the chromatic notes that the natural instrument could not provide.
Some English trumpeters were using a mechanical device on their instruments where a retractable tuning slide both corrected imperfect intonation and doubled the number of notes available on the limited scale of the ‘natural’ trumpet.
In recreating the soundworld of Haydn and Hummel by using the solo instrument for which they wrote their unique trumpet concertos, amongst all the many remarkable features of the keyed trumpet what is perhaps most notable is the sweetness of the instrument’s sound, and its resultant ability to blend with all the orchestral wind instruments.
