We took the Western Highway - which is actually deserving of it's name, since it is a paved 2 lane highway, at least as far as we drove it to the new capital of Belize, Belmopane.
The Hummingbird Highway starts out very rough from the Belmopan side for the first 45 mins to 1 hour, however after that it turns into an excellent paved road all the way to Dangriga.
The cutoff from the Hummingbird Highway to the Southern Highway is a few miles outside of Dangriga, however we went into town to get gas before tackling the last leg of our trip to Placencia.

Technically, the road is called the Hummingbird for only about 33 miles from the Western Highway to the village of Middlesex, and then it is known as the Stann Creek Valley Road, but everybody calls it the Hummingbird all the way.
COASTAL HIGHWAY This 36-mile gravel road, connecting Democracia near Mile 30 of Western Highway with the Stann Creek Valley Road near Melinda, is also known as the Manatee Highway or the “Shortcut.” Despite the name, you get no views of the water or of manatees from the road.

 Getting To The Hopkins/Sittee Area
If you don't turn to go to Hopkins and stay on the southern Highway another 4-6 miles, you will see another intersection with a paved road to Sittee River.
Instead of turning off the Western Highway at mile 31, keep going to around mile 51 or so and follow the signs to Belmopan.
Bus arrives in Hopkins at about 1 PM and 6 PM and continues on the Sittee River Village and to the Southern Highway and on to Placencia.

From the Southern Highway to Placencia most of the 42 km (25 mi) is unpaved and can be treacherous after rains, even for four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The journey to Punta Gorda via the Hummingbird and Southern highways used to be a chiropractor's nightmare: a bone-shuddering marathon via Belmopan, Dangriga, and Big Creek across some of the worst roads in Belize.
At press time the Southern Highway sections from Punta Gorda to Big Falls, at the south end, and from Dangriga to Independence and Big Creek, at the north end, are paved, with work continuing on the remain 50 km (30 mi).

All of the five major highways in Belize are paved, yet they come with a generous supply of speed bumps, potholes, and local drivers who make a sport of passing on curves as though they're en route to the emergency room, only to pull over at a barbecue stand a mile ahead.
The road is treacherous, and Ron, who hours earlier had mocked my supposed fear of the outdoors, is convinced we'll pop a tire at any moment and end up spending the night in the Jimmy without adequate "rations." He has a point.

Additionally, there are the Southern Highway, from Dangriga to Punta Gorda, and the Manatee Highway, locally known as the "Coastal Road," which starts at La Democracia on the Western Highway (near the Belize Zoo) and also leads to Dangriga via Gales Point.
From Belmopan to the western border, this highway is in fair condition.
