Two Cinnabar Moths Tyria jacobaeae were along the North Beach sea wall on the 18th, and their fl and yellow caterpillars have been noted trundling around at Lound Waterworks as well looking for more Ragwort plants to eat.

There were four records of Hummingbird Hawk-moth in 2004 - singles in the Golden Valley area of Folkestone on the 6th July, in eastern Folkestone and at Samphire Hoe in late August, and at Samphire Hoe in mid-October.
The only December Moth of the year was taken at Hythe on the 22nd/23rd November (photo) and a single Oak Eggar was trapped at Folkestone on 6th/7th August, on which night a Pebble Hook-tip also came to light there.
A presumed Ear Moth at Hythe on 28th/29th August was rather late.

Your description sounds like a Nessus Sphinx Moth (Amphion floridensis) one of the diurnal moths in the sphingidae family- here is a recent image of one that I took on a lakeshore.
Try just clicking on the Forum called "Butterflys and Moths" and on top of that sub forum there will be a link on the top and the bottom which will be red and says "new thread" I think.

The 2 moths above are regular day-time visitors to my garden in significant numbers.
