Les Pages Aux Folles: Never Trust a Smiling Humourist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Never trust a smiling humourist because there is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyages of their lives are bound in shallows and in miseries.
Never trust a smiling humourist because a wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse.
Never trust a smiling humourist because they are not like you or I. Never trust a smiling humourist unless there are extenuating circumstances.

 God the All-Humorous
Through your letter to the Universal House of Justice of 14 January you requested a copy of a purported Tablet of Bahá'u'lláh on the subject of humour, and we are instructed to inform you that no Tablet by the Blessed Beauty on this subject is known.
There is a range of meanings associated with this word in the English language, including, for example, the now little-used definition of "one given to humouring or indulging".
For example, it is interesting to note that recent scholars have identified geniality and amusement as the essential ingredients of humour, and playfulness and amusement as the essence of what is comical.

If I were a humourist, I should certainly be a Cockney humourist; if I were a saint, I should certainly be a Cockney saint.

The Hindu : Colossus of cartoons
The minutest movement cannot miss his eye; his sharp observations, as he watches - strangers strolling across the lobby of the hotel, or in animated conversation with each other, hostesses flitting across in a flurry, new arrivals checking in even as guests check out - are down-to-earth, with a serrated edge as the situation demands.
Yet, he cannot be framed within the narrow boundaries of his profession nor can he be dismissed of as just another humourist.

Humour - Is it worth it?
Sounds more like torture to me. Fans of laughter, who are described as "having a good sense of humour" in humourist circles, have, in extreme cases, known to experience breathing problems while laughing, and have sometimes been known to roll on the floor in uncontrollable convultions, their very cells writhing.
And the scariest part is, in the humourist subculture, this reaction is seen as pleasurable, and is attempted to be reproduced whenever possible.
The humourist mindset is easy to recognize, but despite this, it has somehow wormed it's way into human culture, in sometimes undetectable ways.

Hearts of Controversy - Dickens As a Man of Letters
The truth seems to be that Dickens imagined more evil people than did Thackeray, but that he had an eager faith in good ones.
Wit, humour, derision--to each of these words we assign by custom a part in the comedy of literature; and (again) those who do not read Dickens--perhaps even those who read him a little--may acclaim him as a humourist and not know him as a wit.
But that writer is a wit, whatever his humour, who tells us of a member of the Tite Barnacle family who had held a sinecure office against all protest, that "he died with his drawn salary in his hand." But let it be granted that Dickens the humourist is foremost and most precious.
