 Hump yard
A hump yard (or: marshalling yard, classification yard) is a railroad yard found at some freight train stations used to separate railroad cars over a track upon an artificially built hill (hump) onto different tracks for each direction using gravity.
The speed of the wagons rolling down from the hump into the classification bowl must be regulated because the different natural speed of each wagon (full or empty, heavy or light freight, number of axles) and the different filling of the tracks (whether there are actually few or already many wagons within it).
Most hump yards are single yards with one classification bowl but some, mostly very large, hump yards have two of them, thus are double yards, such as Maschen or Bailey yards.

Classification yard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A classification yard or marshalling yard (including hump yards) is a railroad yard found at some freight train stations, used to separate railroad cars on to one of several tracks.
Thus the cars must be shunted several times along their route in contrast to a unit train, which carries, for example, automobiles from the plant to a port, or coal from a mine to the power plant.
The speed of the cars rolling down from the hump into the classification bowl must be regulated because of the different natural speed of the wagons (full or empty, heavy or light freight, number of axles) and the different filling of the tracks (whether there are presently few or already many cars on it).

Farewell to Melbourne Yard NEWSRAIL October 1998
Senior officers were sent to observe freight yard operations throughout the world and it was on their recommendation, that an agreement was reached to construct a hump yard to eliminate the problems of the existing yard.
Although the yard was not fully automated to the extent of some of the larger yards in other countries, it was the type of yard which would meet the requirements in handling and sorting loading arriving into Melbourne.
Unlike many overseas hump yards, where the hump is used for the marshalling of trains, the hump in Melbourne was used for the sorting of wagons arriving in Melbourne for distribution to areas around the city and metropolitan areas including the dock areas (Victoria, Appleton and Swanson), plus the inwards and outwards loading sheds.

Humping can be carried out in most of the bowl with maybe one group of classification tracks (or even just one track in that cluster) locked out.
Some other railroads also used inert retarders in their hump yards and also in some flat switching yards where they were required to prevent roll outs owing to the geography of the land on which the yard was located.
