 Humphrey Gibbs
Humphrey Gibbs was born into the Edwardian upper-class in 1902.
After Eton and Cambridge he emigrated in 1928 to Southern Africa, eventually settling to farm in Southern Rhodesia.
Gibbs was a prominent churchman, and was active in organizing the country's farmers, and in promoting conservation in an age before it was fashionable to do so.

The Honourable Humphrey Vicary Gibbs was born on 22 November, 1902.
Humphrey Gibbs was one of the six men appointed to the first Board of Governors of the new school.
At the same time he announced that he would remain in Government House as the representative of the Queen to whom he was bound by his oath of allegiance and as such was the only legal source of authority in the country.

 Mountbatten
Wilson said as much to the Queen during his audience with her on Tuesday, 16 November, suggesting that Mountbatten should be sent out as her direct emissary as a gesture of support for Sir Humphrey Gibbs and to supply the catalyst for the loyalists.
In Salisbury, however, Smith deepened the crisis that day by further isolating Gibbs, announcing that the Minister External Affairs and Defence, Clifford Dupont, had resigned from the Cabinet and the Parliament and had accepted an appointment by the Rhodesian Executive Council to be 'Acting Officer Administering the Government’ in terms of the 1965 Constitution.
Defiantly, Gibbs issued a statement declaring that he had 'no intention of resigning as Governor.' and that he intended 'to remain at Government House as the lawful Governor of Rhodesia until such time as constitutional government is restored, which I hope will be soon.' He remained there until Rhodesia was declared a republic in 1970.

All was far from quiet in London, where Sir Humphrey had overnight become the toast of the crown.

 Southern Rhodesia Governor's flags (1924 - 1970)
This flag continued to be used by the Governor of Southern Rhodesia during the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1953 - 1963) and continued in use after the break-up of the Federation when Southern Rhodesia became simply Rhodesia.
When Rhodesia unilaterally declared its independence (UDI) on 11 November 1965 the Governor, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, refused to relinquish his post and thus the flag continued in use after UDI, possibly even until Rhodesia declared itself a republic on 2 March 1970.
In common with the Governor-General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the Governor of Southern Rhodesia also had a "personal" or house-hold flag as well.
