In the county the population was spread out with 32.70% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 18.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $20,566, and the median income for a family was $23,719.

All of Humphreys County was granted by the State of North Carolina at the time this was a portion of that State, to survivors of the Continental war, and was afterward farmed out in smaller tracts to the settlers as they arrived from the older States.
Humphreys County is bounded on the north by Houston County, on the east by Dickson and Hickman County, on the south by Perry County and on the west by Benton County, and has an area of 375 square miles.
Waverly, the county seat of Humphreys County, is a flourishing inland town of about 800 inhabitants, and is situated very near the center of the county on the St. Louis branch of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway, sixty-seven miles west of Nashville and eleven miles east of Johnsonville on the Tennessee River.

Humphreys was a Whig before the Civil War and opposed secession, but when the war began, he organized the Sunflower Guards and was soon afterwards elected colonel of the Twenty-first Mississippi Regiment.
Humphreys was seriously wounded at Berryville in September 1864 and was reassigned to duty in south Mississippi.

The present Belzoni area was at that time in the new Washington County and was completely isolated from its county seat, Greenville, and the rest of the county with no roads, no law, no name, no organization of any kind, and very few settlers that we know of.
This area was known as the Dark Corner of Washington County, for it was too far away for the county law enforcers to bother about.
The first fight for Humphreys County began as far back as 1870 when Col. James R. Powell, owner of Daybreak, conceived the idea of forming a new county from parts of the other counties.
