  Kendrick Peak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kendrick Peak (35.4081°N, 111.8507°W) is one of the highest peaks in the San Francisco volcanic field north of the city of Flagstaff in the U.S. State of Arizona and is located on the Coconino Plateau in Coconino County.
Kendrick Peak is between 2.7 and 1.4 million years old and consists primarily of dacite and rhyolite flows that were partly buried by andesite according to the USGS.
In the year 2000 the Kendrick Wilderness and Kendrick Peak were involved in a large wildfire, the results of which are still quite evident to hikers or visitors to the peak.

Humphreys was one of those peaks that never appeared anywhere near my to-do list at the beginning of the summer.
Humphreys was in almost constant view now, making it fairly straightforward to navigate through the numerous small hillocks and grassy slabs that comprise this intricate northeastern end of Humphreys Basin.
They weren't particularly impressive peaks from this angle, little more than bumps along the ridge, and I doubt I'd ever have identified them were it not for the enormous glacier that lay to their north.

This was the highest there is. Looking toward the west, the peaks at Kendrick (10,418 feet) and Bill Williams (9,256 feet) appear as smaller siblings to Humphreys.
Though it is not permissible to hike to the peak of Agassiz (due to the endangered Senecio Franciscanus plant), it would have been novel to have hiked the tallest peak, Humphreys, and hiked within a few hundred feet of the second tallest peak, Agassiz, on the same day.

The first quarter mile of the Humphreys Peak Trail is about as level and easy as it gets, carrying us through upper Hart Prairie in a path parallel with the Snow Bowl chairlift and through a colorful summer meadow filled with blue lupine and alpine Iris.
When we last hiked Mt. Humphreys two years ago in late June, we became acutely aware of why the Navajos often refer to the San Francisco Peaks as "the mountains through which the wind blows," as we struggled through gale force winds of 40-50 MPH to reach the summit.

The adjacent Agassiz Peak is the second highest point at 12,356, followed by neighboring Fremont (11,969) and the rest of the encircling peaks.
The first real view is of a narrow valley between arms of Humphreys and Aggassiz, and a glance upward at the "saddle," which is actually a col, but after all this is the west.
The saddle affords an excellent view of Agassiz, Humphreys, and the deep abyss of the inner basin, which is the remains of the once fiery caldera.

These are the 3 peaks you see in the banner photo on top of this page.
Many highpointers climb by a peak by any means available, utilzing roads, chair lifts, and ever trains to gain the summit.
For the challenging highpoints I believe in climbing the peak under my own power, so driving to the top or riding the train doesn't count for me. That's just how I choose to climb, I don't expect anybody to do the same or discredit another climber's personal standards.

Weather can be treacherous...during my climb the temperatures at the peak were in the low 40's, but there were hurricane-force winds.
The Humphreys Peak trail, which starts in the parking area of the Arizona Snowbowl, is the only route to the top.

You can't see Humphreys itself from there...it's behind Agassiz, which is the prominent peak on the skyline in the camera view.
We climbed Humphreys in October 2005 with some snow on the ground.
By the way, the sign for Humphreys trailhead isn't as big as one trip report implied.
