  Humphry Clinker
The Expedition of Humphry Clinker was the last of the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett, first published in 1771, and is considered by many to be Smollett's best and funniest work.
The title character, Humphry Clinker, is an ostler[?] who does not make his first appearance until about a quarter of the way through the story, when he is taken on by Matthew Bramble, a Welshman, and his family who are travelling through England.
After various romantic interludes, Humphry suffers false imprisonment but is rescued and returned to his sweetheart, the maid Winifred Jenkins.

The characters of Humphry Clinker move from place to place, and as they do so, the novel provides us with quite different evaluations of such quite different places as Bath, London, Yorkshire, and Edinburgh.
Though Humphry Clinker does have an actual plot (in fact, several of them), it does not seem of much importance for much of the novel.
Humphry Clinker seems to offer a rich test case for the problems of describing and evaluating the issue of gender in a comic and satiric novel.

In its way, this is another picaresque story, insomuch as, during its progress, the characters (who relate everything in letters to their friends) pursue their travels in England and Scotland.
Winifred Jenkins, the maid, and Humphrey Clinker himself, the “methodist” manservant whom they pick up on their travels—all these are characters more deeply and kindly seen than any of their predecessors except Hawser Trunnion.
The best among them all is Lismahago, the Scottish soldier, needy, argumentative, proud, eccentric—a figure of genuine comedy, among whose many descendants must be reckoned one of great eminence, Dugald Dalgetty.

The eighteenth-century Clinker is an epistolary novel, presenting a series of letters from members of a particular family as they travel about Britain.
The objective of the Humphry Clinker analysis was to organize the bibliographic objects represented by bibliographic records, not to simply organize the records.

An epistolary novel, "Humphry Clinker" is no stranger in format to the eighteenth century - however, odd to me was the fact that none of the writers - Squire Bramble, his sister Tabitha, their nephew and niece Jery and Lydia Melford, and Tabitha's waiting woman Winifred - ever receives a response.
Their various perspectives on two of the novel's minor characters, the eponymous Humphry Clinker and the combative disputant Scot Obadiah Lismahago (the most cosmopolitan figure among the recurring characters), confer substance, interest, and warmth upon characters who do not themselves write letters.
Humphrey Clinker is a 17th century epistolary novel which tells the tale of the Bramble family and its travels through England and Scotland.

The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker is a picaresque novel that was written towards the very end of the temperamental Smollett’s life and published shortly before his death in 1771.
It is now regarded as his most accomplished novel, and is not coincidentally also his most mellow in outlook.

The letters written by Win Jenkins in Tobias Smollett's Humphry Clinker (1771) have certainly not gone without scholarly comment.
Until now, however, attention seems to have been directed entirely toward linguistic vagaries narrowly conceived rather than toward the broader stylistic and representational mode that these eccentricities of idiom serve.
