The Lovin' Spoonful - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lovin' Spoonful was an American pop-rock band of the 1960s, named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
The band had its roots in a John Sebastian group called the Mugwumps, which split to form the Lovin' Spoonful and and the Mamas and Papas.
The Lovin' Spoonful's music was also featured in Woody Allen's first feature film, "What's Up, Tiger Lily." Zal Yanovsky quit the band after the "You're a Big Boy Now" album was released in May of 1967, and was replaced by Jerry Yester, formerly of the Modern Folk Quartet.

The Spoonful's third album (not counting the soundtrack LP to "What's Up, Tiger Lily?") is the most satisfying of their all too short career.
These are all Spoonful classics and continue to reflect their wide range of influences: the jugband sound of "Henry Thomas," the countrified "Darlin' Companion" and "Nasville Cats," the bluesy "Coconut...
Rain on the Roof, Coconut Grove, Summer in the City, and Lovin' You are all pure gems.

Let's see - there's the Lovin' Spoonful (the folky/country band) the Youngbloods (more rock/country), the Blues Project (RandB and a little bit of everything), with a couple of infamous weirdos as well (the Velvet Underground, the Fugs).
The Lovin' Spoonful was mainly John Sebastian, a smiling man with glasses who sounds like the nicest guy you'll ever meet.
Thus the Lovin' Spoonful were launched on their happy, go-lucky way.

The core of The Lovin' Spoonful were John Sebastian, who was born on March 17th, 1944 in New York, and Zalman Yanovsky, who was born on 19th December 1944 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Looking back The Lovin' Spoonful had two good years and are lovingly remembered by many for their zany image, wild sense of humour and their unique brand of goodtime music, which combined traditional folk and blues influences with the rock and roll of their era.
The Lovin' Spoonful were the backup band on Sonny and Cher's hit 'They're On the Outside'.

But the Spoonful's abundant good vibes turned bad after Yanovsky and Boone were busted on pot charges in San Francisco, only escaping prosecution -- and in Yanovsky's case, deportation -- by turning in their dealer.
Yanovsky briefly reunited with his Spoonful mates on a couple of occasions, filming an appearance in Paul Simon's 1980 film One Trick Pony and performing some of their hits on stage on the occasion of the band's 2000 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band's third and fourth albums, Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful (Yanovsky's last album with the band) and Everything Playin', are scheduled for February.

Those were the money songs, although Bobby Darin discovered the leadoff track, "Lovin' You," and quickly covered it for a Top 40 hit, and the moody "Coconut Grove," a tribute to Fred Neil, would become a permanent part of Spoonful leader John Sebastian's repertoire in his solo career.
An emphasis on the parts of the album is a way of describing it as more a loose collection of disparate tracks than a unified effort, despite Sebastian's hand in all the compositions and his lead vocals on most of them.

 The Lovin' Spoonful
That little bit of textual linguistics aside, the Lovin' Spoonful have built their reputation on their hits, and that reputation could vaguely be described as that of a mild, cutesy 'psycho-folk' bunch of sissies.
The Spoonful never subscribed to the garage newsletter, but somehow they still manage to get a bit of that vibe by introducing dozes of nonchalance and rawness into their playing; there's nothing smooth and perfectly polished on this record, and the guitarists hammer out their chords with more passion than professionalism.
I mean, no Lovin' Spoonful album is groundbreaking or mind-blowing, but there are Lovin' Spoonful albums that have this 'normal music' stuff at the top of the boys' game, and then there are just good albums.

The Lovin' Spoonful burst on the scene like America's answer to The Beatles; John Sebastian's tuneful, melodic hits brightened AM radio and reminded one what was so vital about American music to begin with.
In the fall of '65, The Spoonful burst onto the national scene with their Top Ten single, "Do You Believe in Magic." It was the first of a string of ten hits over the next two years.
Of the Spoonful orginals, I personally prefer the follow-up 2nd album, which includes only original compositions: "Daydream." After all, John Sebastian was considered one of the top songwriters of this era.

The Lovin' Spoonful influenced countless other artists, such as the short lived ersatz Spoonful band, the Critters as well as Joe Cocker, who did a cover version of the Spoonful's "Darling, Be Home Soon." I still think the original was far superior to Joe Cocker's version.
"Summer in the City" is more of a sampler of the Lovin' Spoonful that a solid hits collection, although if you were just going to pick ten songs by the peppy pop/rock/folk group of the Sixties it is hard to argue with what you find here.
As long as you are looking for nothing else and you cannot think of a Lovin' Spoonful song that you would like to have that is not in this sampler collection, then "Summer in the City" is a decent deal.

 FLASHBACK - The Edge
For the cost-conscious Western Illinois University student‚ 1966's "Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful" should numb all the feelings of overwork and self-doubt in no time and make everything in even the most fragile of lives seem pretty darned swell.
Sounding like a mixture of hippies and hillbillies‚ the members of the Lovin' Spoonful latched onto whatever innocence was left within American youth in the mid-'60s.
But the rare exception to his soundtrack standards makes perfect sense given the overwhelming effects of the Lovin' Spoonful on the public.

"Summer in the City" was a stylistic turn for the Lovin' Spoonful -- tougher and less daydreamy.
With a barrage of car horns on the bridge, "Summer in the City" evoked its subject with urban grit and Gershwin-esque grandeur.

Combining folk and jug-band music with exuberant, Beatles-influenced pop, the Lovin' Spoonful's was one of the freshest sounds on the radio in the mid-1960s.
