HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ABC is developing a live-action musical version of ``The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' for the network's ``Wonderful World of Disney'' franchise.
``Hunchback'' will revolve around the characters in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel about lonely and deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo and the lovely and talented Esmerelda.

Hunchback, a wooden steam ferryboat, was built in 1852 at New York City and was purchased by the Navy 16 December 1861.
Flusser sped to their support with Hunchback, Commodore Perry, and Whitehead 3 October, and, although the ships could not reach Franklin, they engaged Confederate troops for three hours below the town, and were forced to withdraw only as the Southerners began felling trees over the narrow river behind them.
Hunchback also carried dispatches during this period, and was based at Deep Bottom, on the James.

Disney animation definitely offered some dark moments prior to Hunchback; starting with the wicked queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and running through others bits like Mufasa’s death in The Lion King, not all of these films consisted solely of sweetness and light.
The opening sequence to Hunchback is terrifically strong, and much of the rest of the film follows along those lines.
Hunchback boasted a lovely and rich palette that varied from soft pastels to burning reds, and the DVD duplicated these wonderfully well.

I do give Disney credit for its attempt to use Hunchback as source material for an animated film, but this may also be the main source of the film's weakness.
The result is a story that at several places begins to delve into the darker Hugo themes, and then has to pull back because, after all, this is "a kid's movie." When things start to get serious, throw in a joke or a song, and then move on...
