In England a hundred was the division of a shire for administrative, military and judicial purposes under the common law.
Above the hundred was the shire under the control of a shire-reeve (or sheriff).
The hundred was also used as a division of the county in some of the English colonies in North America, especially in Maryland and in Delaware.

The return of Chilford Hundred in Cambridgeshire comprises the hundred's verdict in response to articles 1-28 (the end is missing), but entered on the dorse of membrane 2 in the same hand as the main roll is a record of three complaints.
After the sheriff received the writ to organize the inquisition, he informed the hundreds of the forthcoming inquest and caused twelve or twenty-four knights of the shire to be elected (if not nominated by the crown) to supervise the collection of data.
The hundreds of the county were small and mostly in private hands, and it might therefore be suspected that the usual procedure was inappropriate.

It is thought that in origin the hundred comprised 100 geld hides, the geld hide being the basic Anglo-Saxon land unit for taxation purposes; but the hundreds varied considerably in size.
The number of hundreds in a shire also varied, and their boundaries were continually changed.
In Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, and Leicestershire the unit equivalent to the hundred was called a wapentake; in Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmorland, and Durham, a ward.

More than a story-telling addition to the Laguni family and to The Hundred Secret Senses, Kwan is also something of an historian, assuming a role previously allocated to the Chinese mothers in The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife of telling her American-born sister about Chinese history, particularly the Taiping Rebellion (1850-64).
Towards the end of The Hundred Secet Senses, Olivia's questions are “answered” through the coming together of Kwan's multiple lives and identities before she disappears for good on the China trip.

This point about experiencing one's history as fantasy has been stressed also by Marxist critics, who insist that, since the rules which govern a society are those of the ruling class, those places which have no control over their own destiny live without such rational guidelines.
In One Hundred Years of Solitude nothing ever turns out as people expect; everything surprises them; all of them fail; all are frustrated; few achieve communion with others for more than a fleeting moment, and the majority not at all.
Influences from outside (the gypsies) are sporadic, piecemeal, throughout the notional hundred years of the novel, which is the span from the Independence era to the early 1960's.
