Hungarian parliament, the National Assembly (Országgyûlés), is unicameral and consists of 386 seats.
Some Hungarian observers tend to perceive the opening of the display as a definite gesture of the official Budapest addressed to Berlin.
In difference from the 2005 elections in Germany and Poland, the Hungarian pre-election campaing factually did not touch the issue of the mutual relations between Hungary and Russia.

The Szekler Union was not allowed to participate in local elections in June, and, worse, the recently amended law on parliamentary elections confirmed that only those minority organizations already represented in parliament were eligible to run candidates, thus excluding the USR from November's parliamentary elections.
The Hungarian Civic Union further distanced itself from the UDMR in early October when it began a petition drive to gather the 25,000 signatures required to run as a political party in its own right.
In the Szeklerland county of Harghita east of Targu Mures, for instance, 85 percent of the population considers itself Hungarian, and all of the county's two senators and five lower-chamber deputies are UDMR members.

Hungarian public life is strongly polarised around a historically and culturally rooted split between the left and the right, now dominated by the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) and the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union (Fidesz), respectively.
In the Hungarian context, the liberal Free Democrats are in effect on the left, because of their internationalist outlook--and perhaps more importantly because they decided to form a coalition government with the MSZP in 1994-98, a move that was heavily criticised and is still not forgotten by Fidesz, another former anti-communist opposition force.
