Hungarian Dances (Brahms) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based on Hungarian themes.
Each dance has been arranged for a plethora of instruments and ensembles, from piano 4 hands to orchestra.
The Hungarian Dances bear many resemblances to, and may have influenced, the similarly profitable and popular Slavonic Dances of Antonín Dvořák.

 NPRN Composer of the Month
Echoes of native Hungarian music appear in various nooks and crannies throughout Brahms's output, but among the works in which they appear most overtly are the Hungarian Dances for piano four hands.
Brahms began composing these during his Detmold years and added to them gradually for the next several decades years until eventually there were four books containing twenty-one items.
Brahms himself orchestrated three of the dances (the first, third, and tenth); the standard published orchestral versions of the remainder are from a variety of orchestrators, including (for the five dances of Book 4) Antonín Dvorák, who Brahms encouraged and helped early in his career.

Looking at the Hungarian Dances as a whole it appears that the first set of dances (Books 1 and 2) is more popular today than the second (Books 3 and 4).

Johannes Brahms is a well-known classicist of the Romantic Era, avoiding the modern trends of his German symphonist contemporaries.
The 21 Hungarian Dances are mostly borrowed from authentic gypsy and Hungarian sources, with the occasional original tune by Brahms himself; the orchestrations on this disk are taken from various arrangers: Brahms, Dvorak, not to mention the conductor of the CD himself, Ivan Fischer.
The rhapsodical and improvisatory nature of the performances are stunning; a Brahms I have never heard (and perhaps he never had either), but perhaps closer to the sounds that Brahms heard from the traveling bands of gypsy's of his era.

BBC - Classical Review - Brahms: Violin Concerto, Hungarian Dances, Joseph Swensen/Scottish Chamber Orchestra
A big symphonic concerto like the Brahms might seem an odd choice for a chamber orchestra, but the string section of the SCO is so good and full-sounding that it has to be the most impressive aspect of this CD.
You'd expect the concerto to be the highlight of this CD, but it's actually the Hungarian Dances which steal the show in terms of virtuosity and balance.
Brahms originally wrote them for piano duet and the 14 featured here have been orchestrated by Brahms himself and various other composers, including Dvorák.

INKPOT#66 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Cziffra plays Brahms Transcriptions (EMI)
Brahms's Hungarian Dance No.1 opens with a suitably demure statement of the dark dance theme; at the second line however, when the theme comes back, Cziffra launches into his own improvisatory world proper, and there is no stopping him.
Yet the sizzling Hungarian gypsy tunes, mostly embodied in minor key melodies, brings a melancholic dark richness to the otherwise flighty dance rhythm.
Originally written for piano duet, the Hungarian Dances have been orchestrated and transcribed for solo piano by various composers and pianists.
