Hungarian forint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Between 1857 and 1892, the forint was the name used in Hungarian for the currency of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, known in German as the Austro-Hungarian gulden or Austrian florin.
The forint was reintroduced on 1 August 1946, after the 1945-1946 hyperinflation of the pengő.
The process was managed by the Hungarian communist party, which held the relevant ministry seats and the forint's success was exploited for political gains, contributing to the 1948-49 communist take-over of state powers.

The forint, when introduced as a currency in 1946, replacing the pengoy after an unprecedented hyperinflation, could be converted at most as an arithmetical exercise.
One forint was declared to have the value of 0.07575 grammes of gold, and hence it followed (via the gold standard of other currencies) that a US dollar was valued at HUF 11.7, a Deutschmark at HUF 0.12, a Schilling at HUF 0.17, and a pound at HUF 29.3.
