  The Art of Being
Ignoring the final admission of the hunger artist, the key word in the title of Franz Kafka's story seems to be "artist." The man in the cage who starves himself across Europe admits freely that only he knows for certain that he has eaten nothing during a fasting period.
hunger artist is obvioulsy not interesting to people, and if it were there would be no need to go to a great extreme to see one -- trees, rocks, and even earthworms do not eat as we do, and in the case of rocks do not eat at all.
This particular hunger artist was no artist at all, he existed diferentely than people do, though he needed food to subsist, he had no desire for it or the strength it would give him.

After the hunger artist observes that most of the watchers are really on their way to see the animals; those who watch him do so more to assert themselves against the animal-watchers and less because they are interested in the hunger artist.
The hunger artist often thinks things might be better if he were not next to the animals; it makes it too easy for people to choose between him and the animals, the animals smell at night, and he must see and hear them at feeding time.
At the circus, the hunger artist is reduced to this level of diversion‹he places himself in a strategic spot as a mere obstacle for zoo-goers, rather than as the main attraction.

Circus as Education   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
We may believe that Circus is the purest form of dramatic art, drawing its power from that same magic that endowed the shaman as he suffered and soared for his `primitive' audience around his ritual ring of fire.
This lack of literary communication among Circus folk could be due to secrecy, or illiteracy, or to the pointlessness of transmitting complex physical skills through the written word.
Circus acrobats, especially aerialists and contortionists, are rarely the victims of self-imposed strains or injuries.

However, the hunger artist admits that fasting is easy for him, and that if he found some food he liked, he would gladly eat it.
However, the audience does not understand the hunger artist's craft; the watchers (usually butchers, a symbol of gluttony and, perhaps, of non-kosher practices) assigned to ensure he truly fasts assume he cheats.
He restricts the hunger artist's free will and creativity, limiting his fasts to forty days and humiliating the hunger artist in public by shaking him and lying about his lack of endurance.

 CIRCUS
With the chance of the presence of an animal circus in our city, we decided to activate, in an attempt of informing the public, enlightening the dark aspect call “backstage” of this spectacle, which unfortunately is mostly addressed to children.
The view of the whip or the stick with the ribbons, hiding the hook or the nail functions as “a reminder” of the tortures that came before and the animal acts with the conditional reflexes: performs automatically the movements he must, to avoid repeating the tortures.
Because the circus is a spectacle mostly addressed to children, we are wondering what the small child finally gets watching a circus performance.

Hunger circus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Hunger circus" (Romanian: Circ al foamei) was a colloquial name for any in a series of identical buildings which were to be completed as part of Nicolae Ceauşescu's program of systematization during his period as ruler of Romania.
The irony was reinforced by the connotation of "circus" as ridiculous farce.
With transcendent irony, the hunger circuses left unfinished after the 1989 Revolution were later completed, under a revised architectural plan, as eminently capitalist malls such as Bucharest Mall, City Mall and Plaza România.
