  Hunslet Hawks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hunslet announced their arrival the following season by beating Leeds St Johns (who later became Leeds Rhinos) in the 3rd round of the Yorkshire cup.
In 1895 Hunslet were one of the 21 clubs that broke away from the Rugby Football Union, and joined the Northern Football Union.
Powered by a much feared pack known as the Terrible Six, Hunslet were led by Albert Goldthorpe, already in his late 30s but a dominant figure in the early years of the code.

About a mile south of the city centre, it has an industrial past, and is a mixture of modern and 19th century industrial buildings, terraced housing, and 20th century housing.
Hunslet is now prospering as it follows the trend of Leeds generally, and the expansion of office and industrial sites south of Leeds city centre.

The Hunslet cricket wanted to protect there playing surface, so as a result in May of 1883 two of the local teams Albion and Excelsior were granted the sum of £30 to form the Hunslet Rugby Club.
The ban was never fully imposed as later in 1895 Hunslet were one of the 21 clubs that broke away from the Rugby Football Union, and joined the Northern Football Union (this later became the Rugby Football League).
The trophy's that Hunslet won in 1907-08 were - the Yorkshire Cup, the Yorkshire League Trophy, the Challenge Cup and the Championship Trophy.

Hunslet's first locomotive, LINDEN, left their works in Jack Lane, Leeds, for Ampthill, Bedford, on 18th July 1865.
The purchasers were Brassey and Ballard who, three months previously, had secured the contract for the construction of the section between Bedford and Aldenham (Elstree) of the main line of the Midland Railway.
The Hunslet Engine Company was founded in 1864 and the design of Engine No.1 appears to have been started in June of that year.

The Hunslet Engine Company is one of the very few locomotive builders to have stood the time, and still exists as part of the Hunslet Barclay Group.
Hunslet purchased the ailing company and the first diesel to be turned out of the Leeds works was an 0-4-0DM laid down by Kerr Stuart.
The Hunslet Engine Company's last major acquisition was in 1972 when the equity of Andrew Barclay and Co. Ltd of Kilmarnock was purchased, bringing Scotland's sole remaining loco builder under the wing of the Hunslet group.

The restoration of the Hunslet loco began in June 2002, in preperation for the Corus 125 event held in September to celebrate 125 years of rail making in Workington.
The loco is one of the 1100 diesels built by Hunslet in the Jack Lane works between 1939 and 1948.
The Hunslet was dwarfed by F.C. Tingey, a Peckett built in 1948 and weighing in at over 40 tons.

Mary Ann Broadbent (born Leeds 1846?) was widowed around 1880 and moved half her family to Plymouth and left the older 3 in Hunslet.
One of my ancestors Joseph Brook was born in Hunslet and so far I know nothing about his parents or siblings, he married in Hanley so didnt stay in Hunslet.

I know this is a long shot but does anybody have a photograph (or drawing) of the old Woodhouse Hill cricket and rugby ground or even a photograph of the rugby team taken at Woodhouse Hill, which was behind the Parnaby (Cemetery) Tavern.
My Grandmother: Helen Hogarth was born in Hunslet on 17th June 1897 and evidently her father was an Irishman.
I was born in Hunslet in 1930 and evacuated, with children and teachers from South Accomodation Road School, to Nettleham in Lincolnshire.
