 History and Heritage of Hunstanton
Hunstanton has pre-historic origins with evidence unearthed in 1970 of a late Neolithic or early Bronze Age settlement dating back to 1500 - 2000BC.
Under the patronage of his son Hamon Le Strange and spurred on by the investment boom between 1850 and 1870, Hunstanton soon expanded beyond the original planned coastal village to become a fully fledged Victorian seaside resort.
The loss of the railway, however, in 1969 combined with the demolition of the outdoor swimming pool, the availability of cheap package holidays abroad and finally the destruction of the pier in the 1978 floods, took it's toll on the resort which saw a significant decline in the number of visitors coming to the town.

 Walk #159: Snettisham to Hunstanton
I have always thought of Hunstanton as being a very touristy, boring place, but as I walked to the bus station from the clifftop car park in Old Hunstanton I found it to be a better place than I had expected.
Perhaps it was the fact that the sun was shining which made a difference (I had previously visited it in winter), but it seemed to be a relatively nice seaside town, and was not as tacky as many seaside towns seem to be.
This last section of the walk involved doubling back on myself as Old Hunstanton is about a kilometre north of the bus station in Hunstanton; however a previous walk had ended at Old Hunstanton so I needed to get there to say that I had completed this section of the coastal walk.

The name Hunstanton is believed to come from either the Honeystone, which was the old name for the local stone or more likely from the River Hunn which originates in the grounds of Old Hunstanton Hall and forms a moat around the house, the home of the Le Strange family.
