Topic: Hunt the Thimble

In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

  Thimbles and Thimble Collecting
Thimbles were probably unnecessary before the introduction of textiles, because people wore skins joined together by thongs passed through holes punched in the leather.
A thimble was an ideal gift for a young man to give his loved one, because it was used daily and so would remind the girl of her suitor each time she sewed.
Thimbles are lucky; years ago it was tradition to put a miniature silver thimble into the Christmas pudding, and the finder would enjoy good fortune throughout the year.

 Dennett-Rosenthal Paper
The thimble is in plain sight, close enough to bite you if it were a bear, and yet you are not aware of it until that distinctive "aha!" experience occurs.
It means that he or she (or it) "tracks" a perceived mental phenomenon (such as a perception of a thimble) with some sort of feedback guided link which establishes a relationship between that mental phenomenon and some activity which is part of that observer's story.
However, if we accept as valid Dennett's discussions of Hunt the Thimble and Piano tuning, we must also accept that there is a background to consciousness, and that what exists in that background is to some degree independent of the particular probes made by acts of intentional tracking.

Rubin the Rabbit has lost his trousers, Bessie Bee needs a pail for her honey, Murray the Monkey wants some music, and there's sure to be something useful in the tree house if the five missing rungs of the ladder can be found.
Sometimes they are easy to spot but at other times it's a real 'hunt the thimble' exercise because they are well camouflaged by the colourful scenery, demanding acute attention to detail to find them.

The "goose" who gets tagged becomes the "fox." A more complicated game is played with two circles, one within the other, in which the geese may turn at any intersection, and the geese are limited to one for each section of the circle.
Children especially enjoy this game when adults, working in the room where the thimble is hidden share their secret.
Then the group who hid the thimble sing some song and as a searcher gets nearer or further from the thimble, the music gets softer or louder.

Many controversies over risk in the public domain, BSE and MMR vaccine are two examples, boil down to attempting to prove that something can't happen or does not exist.
This appears to be a logical impossibility: a game of hunt the thimble in which failure to find the thimble is taken as proof of its non-existence.
In this talk I shall discuss how the technical matter of attempting to prove nothing is happening is handled in the context of drug development, in particular in trying to show that a generic formulation is the same as an innovator drug.

I planted Fairy Thimbles over a dwarf iris, & if occasionally the foliage were to hump up higher than required for the sake of the earliest spring bulbs, it can be sheered even closer to the ground without afflicting its flowerful performance in summer.
