 Places to Visit - Hunterian Museum, Art Gallery and Mackintosh House
When it opened in 1807, the Hunterian was Scotland's first public museum and it has expanded over the years, with a particular emphasis on Roman antiquities, geological specimens (the Bearsden shark is a well-known exhibit) and coins (30,000 of them, only a proportion on display at one time).
The Hunterian Art Gallery is on the other side of University Avenue and houses a collection of paintings by Whistler, Rembrandt, Ramsay and Reynolds as well as a collection of many of Scotland's best artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Adjoining the art gallery is an amazing reproduction of the inside of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's house at 78 Southpark Avenue where he lived from 1906 to 1914.

The museum is housed in a purpose-built A-listed building which opened in 1876 and the permanent displays were refurbished in 1990 with assistance from the Scottish Museums Council.
An art gallery extension was built in 1958 and renovated in 1995, upgrading the temporary exhibition space for touring and in-house temporary exhibitions.

The Museum was opened to the public in 1807 ‘from twelve until two every day, except Sunday.’ The Hunterian is thus Scotland’s oldest museum.
The University of Glasgow is situated in the Hillhead district, 3km west of the city centre.
Currently, wheelchair-bound visitors, or people with motor disabilities, can access all but one balcony area of the Museum, by lift, while in the Art Gallery, access is by ramp to ground floor, and thereafter by lift to the basement and first floor Print Gallery.

Born in Glasgow, and suffering from a bad foot and eye problems, he was free to discover and draw sketches of a great deal of the Scottish countryside as a child.
His House for an Art Lover was finally built in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park in 1996, and the University of Glasgow (which owns the majority of his watercolour work) rebuilt a terraced house Mackintosh had designed, and furnished it with his and Margaret's work (it is part of the University's Hunterian Museum).
The Glasgow School of Art building (now renamed "The Mackintosh Building") is regularly cited by architectural critics as among the very finest buildings in the UK.
