In 1884 George Hunter (Hunterville) walked from Wellington to the junction of the Murimotu and Onga Tracks, where he placed a peg and the settlement of Hunterville came into being.
Roading in Hunterville was a problem with mud reaching to the horse's girths.
A Post Office was opened in 1885 and an early mail service by horseback started with Mr TG Taylor riding from Marton to Hunterville and on to Braemore, taking two days for the return trip.
