On a recent early morning in May, a park ranger and Friends of Hunting Island volunteers discovered the tracks of a loggerhead turtle that had emerged from the ocean and crossed the beach in the night.
But in 1889, due to the erosion that is common on barrier islands, it was necessary to disassemble the lighthouse and move the pieces to the present location, where it was then reconstructed.

Hunting Island is nice, long way to grocery stores, hope you got reservations in the 1-100 sites, the 100's and up are on the side of the campground bordering the marsh, very buggy, the 1-100's are on the ocean side and with the ocean breeze bugs are not as bad.
We were planning to go to Hunting Island for the first time in March, but an illness in the family has made any long trips away from home impractical this year.
Hunting island has a fishing pier but it is past the public area of the park, which is several miles down the main highway past the camping entrance.

It was originally located on the north end of the island but in 1889 it was moved 1.3 miles from the old site because of beach erosion.
We walked on the beach where we could see how the sea is eroding the island and claiming the forest.
