Percival Jet Provost T.1 G-AOBU was the 6th machine out of 12 constructed by Hunting-Percival, and made its first flight on 13th June 1955.
Tim acquired G-AOBU and it was moved to Alan's airstrip near Newbury in September 1991, with the intention of restoring this early variant of the Jet Provost to flying condition.
In the meantime, work was continued on the Jet Provost T.1, and it soon became obvious that it was going to be a much bigger job than was originally thought.

This was not ideal however and in 1953 the Air Ministry produced a requirement for a simple jet trainer suitable for introducing student pilots to jet flying.
The Jet Provost, as the new aircraft was named first flew in 1954 becoming the worlds first basic jet trainer, and began RAF service at No 2 FTS in 1955.
From the late 1950's to the 1990's the Jet Provost was the basic jet trainer for the RAF and was operated by many aerobatic teams during this time.

The RAF was impressed by the Jet Provost’s handling and seating configuration; after a four year comparative trial period of the T Mk 1s, 201 Jet Provost T Mk 3s were ordered in 1959 with Martin-Baker ejection seats, tip tanks, upgraded avionics and a clear canopy.
The Jet Provost design was later developed into the popular and capable BAC Model 167 Strikemaster light attack jet, but even the Jet Provost was to be armed with two machine guns on the export versions of the aircraft, the T.Mk51, T.Mk52 and T.Mk 55.
Retired from the military, the Jet Provost is now a popular and inexpensive jet for warbird enthusiasts in England, the Netherlands, Australia and the USA.

Called the P.56 the Percival entry also had the edge because their early start made them the only firm able to meet the time limits specified by the RAF for delivery of a prototype.
The Provost was a two-seat, side-by-side low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear of the tailwheel variety, powered by a 550hp Alvis Leonides 126 radial engine.
The Provost remained in service until they were replaced by a major revision of the design that evolved the P.56 Provost into the Jet Provost trainer, which eventually evolved into the Strike Master multi-role trainer and light attack aircraft in 1967.

 Jet Provost
Developed by Hunting Percival Aircraft from it's piston Provost primary trainer of the late 1940's, the Jet Provost was built in response to a 1953 RAF requirement for a jet powered primary trainer so as to provide pupils with all through jet training.
The first often Jet Provost T.l's flew in the summer of 1954 and the type was used for trials by No. 2 Flying Training School from the summer of 1955 alongside the existing piston Provost.
A greater benefit was that pilots on the Jet Provost took less time to reach their solo flying stage than on the existing Provost.
