Peterborough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peterborough (Burgh, Burgus sancti Petri) is proved by its original name Medeshampstede to have been a Saxon village before 655 when Saxulf, a monk, founded the monastery on land granted to him for that purpose by Penda, king of Mercia.
Among the privileges claimed by the abbot as early as the 13th century was that of having a prison for felons taken in the soke and borough.
On April 1 1974 Huntingdon and Peterborough was abolished and the current district was created by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Peterborough, Old Fletton urban district, Barnack Rural District, Peterborough Rural District, Thorney Rural District and part of Norman Cross Rural District.

In reply to Mark Ranger, the guided busway, if it met the specifications drawn up by the council (that is, 06.00-24.00 7 days a week), actually would have helped me. I could have got the 20.15 train from Peterborough to Huntingdon then a guided bus to the north side of Cambridge.
Or, for that matter, I could have got one of the existing buses from Huntingdon, which would have got me to Chesterton Rd (nowadays they all seem to go that way) at about 21.35.
The trouble is that the rail ticket I had was to Cambridge and would not be valid on the bus from Huntingdon to Cambridge (though as it was "not London" rather than "via Ely" it would be valid between Peterborough and Huntingdon).
