Huntly is considered one of the "noblest baronial mansions" in Scotland.
The old castle was burned down in 1452 by the Douglas Earl of Moray, and the first Earl of Huntly put up the 'new werk' in the mid-15th century just to the south of the auld-werk (the large tower).
The 2nd Marquis of Huntly was hanged for his support of Charles I and in 1640 the castle was occupied by the Covenanters, who destroyed much of the interior, including defacing much of the stonework of religious images.

Huntly or Strathbogie Castle, a stronghold in the 13th century of the Strathbogie Earls of Athole, by King Robert Bruce was granted to Sir Adam Gordon, lord of Gordon in Berwickshire, who fell at the battle of Halidon Hill (1333).
Huntly Lodge, on a rising-ground, 1¼ mile N by E of the town and 3 furlongs N of the castle, was originally a shooting-box of the Duke of Gordon, but was enlarged in 1832 into a handsome and commodious edifice.
The parish of Huntly, formed by the union in 1727 of the ancient parishes of Dumbennan and Kinnoir: the latter to the right or E of the Deveron, is bounded NW by Cairnie, N and NE by Rothiemay in Banffshire, E by Forgue and Drumblade, SE by Drumblade, S by Gartly, and W by Glass.

In 1506, Alexander, the third Earl of Huntly, was granted a charter changing the name of the castle and surrounding area from Strathbogie to Huntly, in effect fitting the geography to his title.
The remodelling around 1600 included the remarkable fireplaces on view in the palace, one of which is dated 1606, and the decorative oriel windows and inscription on the exterior of the upper floor of the palace.
In 1640 Huntly Castle was occupied by the Covenanting Army.
