Cross was a Ranger of sorts, a failed Druid who still wished to be of use to the woods around him, so he became a proficient ranger attatched to the Druids under Sulvanus.
Cross started to teach the intelligent boy the rudiments of swordplay, using a carved branch for Xi’ans practice blade, always meaning to find a smithy who would make the boy a proper blade when he had the time.
As he was with Cross when they were found, he had them memorized in his head, and with the help of the druids, they quickly found the bandits and brought them to justice.
