Huo Yuanjia (Fok Yun Gap in Cantonese) was born sometime between 1867 and 1869 in Xiaonan Village in Jinghai County in Tianjin, the fourth of his father Huo En Di's ten children.
Huo Yuanjia, however, was born weak and susceptible to illness (at an early age he contracted jaundice that would recur periodically for the rest of his life) so his father refused to teach him Wushu.
Huo Yuanjia needed to disguise the fact that his school was for the learning of self-defense, the building up of health and mind, and the instilling of pride and patriotism into its members and the community.

Huo Yuanjia grows into an illiterate adult (portrayed as such by Jet Li), strong -- the training has cured his asthma -- and determined to revenge himself upon Zhou, the other bullies of his youth and the enemies of his father's school -- father had died in combat, before his son's eyes, years earlier.
When one of Huo's disciples is carried back to the school one evening, beaten and bloodied, claiming it was at the hands of Master Chin, the arrogant, hot tempered Master Huo tears across town to interrupt Chin's birthday celebration and inflict a most terrible, and most final revenge.

As far as I know, Huo Yuanjia's life story (with Leung Kar Yan as the title character) was covered in Yuen Woo Ping's LEGEND OF A FIGHTER.
