Huperzia has the appearance of being the most primitive genus of clubmosses, one of the most primitive genera of vascular plants on Earth in appearance (along with Selaginella).
Plants of Huperzia typically have small, scale-like leaves that radiate out from a central stalk, with sporangia at the bases of the leaves, which are usually in ranks of six or eight.
Recent genetic studies have determined that Huperzia is closely allied with the odd monotypic genus Phylloglossum, and that these two genera should possibly be in their own family.

A clubmoss with a cone which is merely a somewhat broader extension of the shoot belongs to the genus Lycopodiella, represented by a single species in the North Country.
One of the common and confusing Huperzia hybrids, Huperzia appalachiana x selago has also been identified in northeastern Minnesota.
Huperzia species also reproduce by bulblets (gemma) produced at base of upper leaves which, when mature, fall to ground and sprout to form new plants.

HupA was first isolated from Huperzia serrata in 1980 at the Shanghai Institute, when researchers noted some activities of the herb that would be useful for treating Alzheimer’s.
One researcher has done toxicity studies on the whole plant that have found that the herb is not only safe, but that one would have to ingest more than 100 times the recommended dosage to have any kind of ill effects, like nausea.

In Huperzia, one of the most primitive extant vascular plants, tracheid cell wall deposition includes two layers of wall material that are distinguished by their staining properties under the TEM.
This pattern of secondary wall layers in Huperzia matches precisely the pattern of wall thickenings in the fossil G-type tracheids of ancestral zosterophylls and lycopods, and provides critical evidence for an explicit hypothesis of tracheid developmental evolution.
Moreover, structural congruence between tracheids of Huperzia and fossil S- and P-type tracheids provides strong evidence for a single origin of tracheids among vascular plants.

Ferns and Fern Allies of Wisconsin: Huperzia lucidula, shining club-moss
The species of Huperzia do not have horizontal stems, as do our other genera in the Lycopodiaceae, and the sporangia are borne at the bases of stem leaves, rather than in terminal strobili as in the other members of Lycopodiaceae.
The gemmae separate from the branches when mature, so you may not find the gemmae late in the year, or on branches formed during previous years, but the gemmiferous branches will persist.
Huperzia lucidula is the most common and widespread species in this genus in Wisconsin and it usually grows on soil rather than rocks.

Wagner and Beitel (1993) hypothesize that the variation in the genus Huperzia is caused by different combinations of original (diploid) genomes that are present in the different ploidy entities.
In their 1992 paper, on the generic classification of modern North American Lycopodiaceae, they provided a generic classification based on 50 characters of anatomy, chromosomes, spores, and gametophytes with states that they assigned as either primative or derived and analysed using the methods of ground-plan-divergence cladistics (Wagner 1980).
