One of the earliest forms of the hurdy gurdy was the organistrum, a large instrument with a guitar-shaped body and a long neck in which the keys were set (covering one diatonic octave).
During the Renaissance, the hurdy gurdy was a very popular instrument, along with the bagpipe, and a characteristic form with a short neck and a boxy body with a curved tail end developed.
Hurdy gurdies are used in many of the recordings by the Swedish groups Garmarna and Hedningarna.

Without any doubt, my $20 Hurdy Gurdy has been (& is still being) heard by far more people in Michigan and this part of the Great Lakes than any other Hurdy Gurdy.

No seriously, I had never listened to this band until I saw them open for Garmarna at the Nordic Roots Festival (the hurdy gurdy/fiddle player in Garmarna is also in Hurdy Gurdy).
The awesome Donovan cover is the same version used on that record, as is "Barking Dogs." The only exclusive here is a techno remix of "Hurdy Gurdy Man," but it's only a pale imitation done by some faceless Rough Trade person, not a Paul Leary or Jackofficers remix.
My kids and I are teaching ourselves how to play these instruments and we are using these three CD's to hear how some short, familiar songs are *supposed* to sound.
