  History of Hurley
In September of 1664 the entire New Netherland Colony, extending from Albany, NY to Dover, Delaware, was surrendered by Governor General Stuyvesant to an English Fleet under the command of Colonel Richard Nicolls.
In 1708, under the rule of Queen Ann, the roads of the colony of New York were straightened, and the present road system in the hamlet was established.
Today the Town of Hurley is a rural/suburban community, principally noted for its quiet neighborhoods, large sweet corn farms and the Historic District with its ties to a very vibrant past.

 The Blizzard of '88 Hurley New York
The billowing smoke from the burning buildings on Hurley Avenue would have been very noticeable in Hurley, and those who saw it would have fled in fear, knowing that they were next, as there were no forces to stop or slow the advance of the British.
Hurley and it's grain crop was saved from destruction when the British soldiers on Hurley Avenue heard the "retreat" signal blown on a whistle and were called back to the Strand to board their ships.
Hurley Main Street became a military outpost with guards stationed at all the roads leading into the village.

The northern section of the Town was a forested wilderness until the discovery, in the 1830s, of a fine quality shale.
