 Hurricanes.net -- News - 2005 Pacific Hurricane Season Starts With A Bang
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Reuters) - Hurricane Adrian, the first of the 2005 season, lost strength as it hit Central America early on Friday although its heavy rains threatened to cause dangerous flash flooding and mudslides.
Adrian had killed two people in a mudslide even before making landfall but it was quickly downgraded to a tropical storm after slamming into El Salvador's Pacific Coast, where 20,000 evacuees took refuge in emergency shelters.
"The biggest threat from Adrian continues to be torrential rainfall which will likely produce flash flooding and potentially devastating mudslides over the mountainous terrain of Central America," the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Tropical Storm Adrian Unusual In Timing And Path (May 24, 2005) -- Only four tropical cyclones have made landfall over Guatemala or El Salvador since 1966: Tropical Storm Adrian is about to become the fifth.
As Hurricane Ophelia is set to make landfall on the North Carolina coast on Wednesday or Thursday (Sept. 14 or 15), analysis techniques developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Tropical Cyclones group in the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies are helping to predict the anticipated path of the storm.
According to Velden, Ophelia is "meandering between tropical storm and hurricane," and because it is hugging the coast, satellite-based data is less critical than other types of information, although still helpful.
