Hurricane Opal was in a weakening stage as it crossed the Florida Panhandle coast.

Alicia, in August 1983, was the first hurricane to make landfall on the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Allen hit South Texas on Aug. 9, 1980.
Severe freshwater flooding was minimized by Alicia's fast movement inland, and most damage was the result of wind and storm surge or a combination of the two.
Although Alicia cost Texans $2 billion, it is estimated that a hurricane the size of Carla would have doubled or tripled the damage.

Seriously...real seriously...from a Florida native...if a hurricane of any significance in coming your way you need to be at least 100 miles away in a "safe" direction, and you need to move it at 36-48 hours before any strong outer bands are expected to hit your area.
A hurricane is not a hurricane is not a hurricane--they are ranked on a scale from Category 1 (minimal, sustained winds 73+mph) to Category 5 (140+, I think).

Hurricanes have always been the bane of Texas Gulf Coast communities and Hurricane Carla in 1961 was a massive storm that was the most costly in Texas history to date ($450 million).
We were nearly wore out before Alicia hit and in fact I was sent home after a night of work and told to not report until after the hurricane had passed through.
One of the biggest reasons why Alicia was such a damaging storm for electrical service was that many trees had grown up since Hurricane Carla and their limbs proved to be the missiles that destroyed so much of the system.

As we salty old-timers remember, the last Category 3 hurricane to slam directly into Galveston was Hurricane Alicia in August 1983; it killed 21 people, caused $2 billion in damage.
The irony is that the problem with this one, assuming it's some of Hurricane Alicia clone, may not be the storm surge in Galveston (seawall + elevated structures), the flooding (that occurred with slow-moving Tropical Storm Allison in 2001), or the wind damage if you're in a typical house with a foundation.
The relatively serene community of Seabrook (near NASA and where I grew up) got a 12-foot storm surge off Galveston Bay from Hurrican Alicia; such a surge today would dump second-story bay-water all over the tourist-friendly boardwalk in Kemah.
