 Structure of Mature Hurricanes
Hurricanes may extend from 1000km from its center, and at the core there is typically an eye of 5-50 Km radius with warm, calm winds an little deep convection surrounded by an eyewall cloud about 10-20km wide with extremely strong cyclonic wind flow and intense convection.
The eyewall is the place where most of the energy conversion that maintain the storm occurs, and wherein the maximum errors were found in ref. Jorgensen 1984, observed 4 mature hurricanes by using radial observation to analyze the vertical structure of the eyewall.
Jorgensen, 1984b, found that the subsidence region for Allen was organized in a channel 10-20km wide along the inner edge of the eyewall, rather than in the eye center.
