Hurricanes are part of a family of weather systems known as "tropical cyclones." The word hurricane is from the West Indian word hurricane, meaning "big wind." A hurricane begins its life as a disorganized storm system which forms over warm, tropical waters in the Atlantic.
Hurricanes are usually compact storms, with maximum wind velocities extending out 10 to 100km from the eye.
Hurricanes are classified into five categories, based on their wind speeds and potential to cause damage.

Hurricane names can and do get retired, not to be reused for at least ten years, perhaps longer.
This is not a complete list of deadly or destructive hurricanes since many such storms hit before 1950 when naming began.
However, because the name does not appear after that time, it is assumed that the name was retired retrospectively for the damages caused by the 1954 storm of the same name.
