Hurricane Celia, Auqust 3, 1970: Hurricane Celia was one of the most destructive storms to ever hit Texas, with damages estimated at $1.6 billion (in 1990 dollars).
Celia became a hurricane on August 1 in the Gulf of Mexlco and intensified rapidly in 15 hours before it crossed the coast north of Corpus Christi.
Hurricane Gilbert was also a monumental storm, because it had the lowest sea level pressure ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere at 888 mb (26.23 inches).

Evacuations of the upper Texas coast began at 11 am on the 2nd and hurricane warnings were extended southward to Corpus Christi at 5 am on the 3rd.

While Celia pales in strength comparisons with other storms, this hurricane introduced an aspect of hurricanes previously thought to be impossible - incredible wind gusts that far exceed the hurricane's winds.
With winds of 130 mph and wind gusts estimated as high as 180, Celia gave the Coastal Bend a taste of the massive destruction that can occur with hurricanes.
Celia killed 9 people and cause 466 injuries, a small amount when compared to the damage caused to housing structures.
