The hurricane continued to strengthen as it turned to the northwest, and hit southern Cuba near Playa del Cajio as a 120 mph (190 km/h) major hurricane on the 13th.
Charley produced one tornado in Chesapeake and one in Virginia Beach.

Of additional interest was the development, in March, of a hurricane in the South Atlantic, the only documented hurricane in that basin to impact land, and the first hurricane in the South Atlantic to be recorded in the satellite era.
Hurricane Frances was at category four strength (140 mph, 122 kts) as it moved towards the southeastern Bahamas, passing over the Turks and Caicos Islands on September 1st.
Charley maintained hurricane strength as it moved across the Florida Peninsula though windspeeds dropped to approximately 86 mph (75 kts, category one) as it reached the east coast of the state and re-emerged over Atlantic waters.

I am trying to contemplate what this scene was going to be like in about 8 hours when the heart of hurricane Charley was forecasted to come roaring ashore here with winds up to 115mph and bringing with it a surge wave estimated to be 20 feet high.
Charley had shifted course, was now a level 4 hurricane with winds up to 145mph and was expected to come ashore at Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda.
If Charley had come ashore here as predicted when we left as a level 4 hurricane with winds of 150mph instead of the 115mph I was expecting who knows what would happen.
