Hurricane Ophelia (2005) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurricane Ophelia was the fifteenth named tropical cyclone and the eighth hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
As the storm neared the Outer Banks, the watch was upgraded to a warning for the areas closest to the predicted route of the storm.
In Atlantic Canada, considerable preparations were taken for Ophelia, primarily because of memories of Hurricane Juan of the 2003 season, which had caught the authorities off-guard.

hurricane. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Hurricanes and typhoons usually move westward at about 10 mph (16 kph) during their early stages and then curve poleward as they approach the western boundaries of the oceans at 20° to 30° lat., although more complex tracks are common.
The Saffir-Simpson scale is the standard scale for rating the severity of a hurricane as measured by the damage it causes.
A hurricane warning is issued when hurricane conditions (winds greater than 74 mph/119 kph or dangerously high water and rough seas) are expected in 24 hours or less.

 Hurricane SOP
Hurricanes and tropical storms are cyclones with tropical origins.
Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center known as the "eye." The "eye" is generally 20-30 miles wide, and the storm may have a diameter of 400 miles across.
More dangerous than the high winds of a hurricane is the storm surge — a dome of ocean water that can be 20 feet high and 50 to 100 miles wide.

Hurricane, whose real name is Gloria Rodriguez, took a bilingual approach; most of her lyrics are in English, although she has no problem flowing in Spanish.
And when Hurricane provides Spanish-language lyrics, she raps in the Newyorican dialect; a type of Spanish (or "Spanglish") that is spoken by Puerto Ricans in and around the Big Apple.

FAQ: HURRICANES, TYPHOONS AND TROPICAL CYCLONES (Part 1 of 2)
Hurricane Andrew is a good example of a very intense tropical cyclone (922 mb central pressure and 64 m/s (125 kt) sustained winds at landfall in Florida) that was also relatively small (15 m/s winds extended out only about 150 km from the center).
A concentric eyewall cycle occurred in Hurricane Andrew (1992) before landfall near Miami: a strong intensity was reached, an outer eyewall formed, this contracted in concert with a pronounced weakening of the storm, and as the outer eyewall completely replaced the original one the hurricane reintensified.
Thus an Atlantic hurricane that is given a CI number of 4.5 (winds of 77 kt and pressure of 979 mb) could in reality be anywhere from winds of 60 to 90 kt and pressures of 989 to 969 mb.

The hurricane moved generally north across the central Gulf generating waves that were between 21 m (70 ft) and 27 m (90 ft) high causing severe damage to numerous oil and gas platforms offshore.
Although downgraded to a category 3 hurricane at landfall east of Gulf Shores, Alabama, storm surge along the open coast in excess of 3m (10 ft) was measured and breaking waves of 3.7 m (12 ft) were modeled.
One particularly interesting phenomenon observed during Hurricane Lili, was the important role played by the muddy inner shelf off western Louisiana in dissipating wave energy and inhibiting the development of the storm surge field on the shelf and along the coast.

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF HURRICANE GILBERT ON TERRESTRIAL BIRD POPULATIONS ON JAMAICA
Fifty percent of the lowland nectarivore populations increased, 54% of the fruit/seedeater populations increased, and both the resident (67%) and migrant (47%) in- sectivores increased.
After the hurricanes, the bullfinches were probably unable to find food in the sugar-cane dominated lowlands and, as our study suggests, it is likely that the montane fruit and seed crops were de- stroyed.
Thus, hurricanes could contrib- ute to these avifaunal characteristics on Carib- bean islands by reducing the number of species surviving in montane habitats, increasing en- demism and extinction rates of montane spe- cies, and favoring the survival of species ca- pable of using a broad range of habitats.

The hurricane caused extensive damage along North Carolina's Outer Banks beginning late Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 31) before recurving to the northeast and out to sea, as predicted by the GFDL model.
This forecast system provides improved hurricane track predictions roughly two days in advance of hurricane conditions and has the potential to provide useful forecasts of storm intensity and precipitation as well.
In the case of Hurricane Emily, the model successfully predicted the occurrence of hurricane-force winds in the Cape Hatteras, N.C. vicinity.

Aviso/Altimetry - Applications: Hurricane Katrina intensification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Hurricane Katrina devastated coastal areas of Louisiana and Mississippi causing the flooding of New Orleans in late August 2005.
Because the sea surface temperatures are mostly homogeneous throughout the region, they do not reveal warm and deep features, such as the Loop Current (cf Image of the Month, April 2004: A looping current) and its associated anticyclonic (warm) rings, which have temperatures larger than 26°C reaching depths of tens of meters.
After hurricane force winds erode the sea surface temperatures by mixing the surface waters with cooler deeper waters, the eye of the hurricane (the only part of the hurricane that takes energy from the ocean) 'sees' temperatures of the mixed layer.

Developed by the NWS to predict hurricane storm surge for a given set of conditions (e.g., hurricane strength, wind speed, and direction of movement, geography), it is also used to help plan evacuation routes and locate emergency shelters based on estimates of which geographic areas could be flooded under certain storm scenarios.
