Hurricane Gloria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurricane Gloria was a powerful Cape Verde-type hurricane that formed during the 1985 Atlantic hurricane season and prowled the Atlantic Ocean from September 16 to September 28.
A turn to the west-northwest occurred on September 22, and the hurricane passed 155 miles (250 km) to the north of Anegada, the northernmost island in the Lesser Antilles.
While passing to the northeast of the Bahamas, Gloria strengthened significantly in very favorable conditions, reaching major hurricane status on the 24th and peak wind speeds of 145 mph (235 km/h) and a central pressure of 919 mbar on the 25th.

 Remembering Hurricane Gloria--20 Years Later--July 9, 2005
Prior to Gloria's arrival, the only time I had a personal experience with a tropical cyclone of any kind was some six years earlier with Hurricane David, which by the time it had made it up into New Jersey, was a modest tropical storm.
As Hurricane Gloria churned up the waters of the North Atlantic from its tropical origins off the African Coast and Cape Verde Islands to its ultimate demise in the Canadian Maritimes, the media began to cover it as the Storm of the Century, a term, which has also been used several times since September, 1985.
Gloria, which along with Hurricane Elena, had its named retired, was also responsible for some 8 deaths in the United States including one in Long Island, New York, two in Connecticut, two in Rhode Island, and one in New Hampshire.

Potential Vorticity Influences on Hurricane Gloria's Motion
Although the factors that contribute to hurricane motion in a two-dimensional barotropic context are reasonably well understood, the three-dimensional dynamics that determines hurricane motion is not.
Multi-level, multi-nested analyses of Hurricane Gloria of 1985, including Doppler winds near the storm's center and Omega dropwindsondes in its environment, are the most comprehensive yet developed for a single hurricane.
The vector difference between the associated DLM wind anomaly at the center of the hurricane (vector in bottom panel of figure 1; magnitude = 6.1 m/sec) and the translation of the vortex (magnitude = 6.2 m/sec) is 1.4 m/sec.

As the system moved west across the central Atlantic, it gradually strengthened into a tropical storm and then into a hurricane; it was a classic "Cape Verde" hurricane, in kind with such monsters as Hazel in 1954 and Donna in 1960.
Gloria approached the northern Leeward Islands Sept. 21, but the hurricane curved northeast and spared the islands a direct hit.
Gloria ranked as the 16th most-intense landfalling hurricane, hitting as a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane damage potential scale storm with a minimum pressure of 942 millibars or 27.98 inches, and the 13th costliest hurricane in U.S. history with damage totaling about $900 million.

The influence of Hurricane Gloria (1985) on the environment is investigated by comparing hurricane model integrations either including or excluding the hurricane in the initial condition.
The comparisons of the wind and temperature fields from the hurricane and nonhurricane integrations indicated that the areal extent of the hurricane`s influence was much larger at the upper layer than at the lower layer.
Apparently, the hurricane`s cyclonic circulation at the lower layer affected the movement of the front approaching from the west.

 Hurricane
Hurricanes are powerful storms that develop over warm, tropical oceans and measure several hundred miles in diameter.
They have two main parts; the eye of the hurricane ― which is a calm area in the center of the storm usually measuring about 20 miles in diameter and presenting very few clouds ― and the wall of clouds that surrounds the calm eye.
Hurricanes are very dangerous over the oceans, but it is upon landfall that they can cause the most severe damage, destruction and loss of life.

In his first book, journalist/dramatist Jiler gives a virtually blow-by-blow account of events that transpired on September 25-26, 1985, when Hurricane Gloria, the worst in half a century, hit the narrow, elongated tract of land off Long Island's southern coast known as Fire Island.
His profiles of the 10 people, straight and gay, who refused to flee from Gloria to the mainland are also interesting, and he vividly depicts the storm's terrifying, capricious power.
On September 25, 1985, Hurricane Gloria hit landfall on Fire Island, a summer resort off the shore of Long Island, N.Y. While much of the East Coast was evacuated, several island residents, for various reasons, decided to stick it out.

Gloria first passed over Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on September 27 as a category 3 storm.
Unfortunately, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina was under clouds in the after image although the offshore turbidity signal is apparently not as high as that subsequent to hurricane Emily that also brushed this area in 1993.
Noticeably more turbid waters are found in the shallow Chesapeake and Delaware Bay areas perhaps in part due to increased outflow from the Potomac and Delaware Rivers.
