Hurricane Joan was an Atlantic hurricane during 1988 that crossed over into the Pacific where it was called Tropical Storm Miriam.
Joan-Miriam is one of only seven storms on record as having made the transition from an Atlantic to a Pacific hurricane.
After passing over Nicaragua and into the Pacific Ocean, Joan was reborn in the warm Pacific waters as Miriam.

The system that was to become Hurricane Joan formed in a low altitude Tropical Wave that moved off the northeast coast of Africa on October 5, 1988.
Historically the Hurricane Season usually winds down after October 20th with only 40 named Tropical Storms or Hurricanes forming in the Month of November during the past 100 years.
It reached hurricane strength late on the 17th near the north coast of Colombia.
