Hurricane Lili was a powerful hurricane during the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season that caused damage across the Caribbean and into Louisiana.
Lili was a well-observed hurricane at its final landfall in Louisiana, as three mobile radars were deployed to the area of predicted landfall, including the National Severe Storms Laboratory's SMART Radar.
The damage total from Hurricane Lili was $860 million dollars (2002 USD), of which $30 million was in Mississippi and the rest in Louisiana.

Hurricane Lili (1984) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurricane Lili was the final tropical cyclone of the 1984 Atlantic hurricane season, and was one of only four Atlantic storms on record to reach hurricane status in the month of December.
Lili struggled to retain its hurricane status for 3 days, but succumbed to the shear on December 23 by weakening to a tropical storm.
Because its effects were minimal, the name Lili was not retired, and was used again for the 1990 season and 1996 before being retired in the 2002 season and it was replaced by Laura in 2008.

Hurricane Lili caused Perrodin's home and others' the loss of electricity for six days, while Perrodin and residents tried to fight off the heat without use of air conditioners or fans.
Perrodin recalled that the second day of the hurricane was unbearable because it was so hot "and all you could do was hope you could make it through." Trucks traveled into Louisiana from neighboring states of Oklahoma and North Carolina to aid in restoring electricity to the affected cities.
Perrodin was in the eye of Hurricane Lili, and when a part of the eye passed, "it got dead calm for about an hour." Read More...

Hurricane Lili Threatens Storm Weary Louisiana
Hurricane Lili is only the fourth hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
But Lili would spare the Big Easy and its Louisiana neighbors as it made landfall as a much weaker storm as shearing winds from a nearby trough brought the storm's winds down to only 100 mph, which made it only a strong Category Two Hurricane.
As Lili moved farther inland over Louisiana, tornadoes became a problem as around ten twisters formed near the center of circulation, which was quite rare since tornadoes usually form in the Northeastern quadrant of a landfalling hurricane.

Hurricane Lili was a Category 1 hurricane, and was centered over Louisiana on Oct. 3, 2002.

During this time span, Hurricane Lili rapidly weakened from a category 4 to a category 1 storm, with its maximum sustained winds decreasing by 45 knots (51.8 mph) in the 13-hour period, until she made landfall in Louisiana.

Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, and Rita are among the most powerful hurricanes recently to enter the Gulf of Mexico.
One particularly interesting phenomenon observed during Hurricane Lili, was the important role played by the muddy inner shelf off western Louisiana in dissipating wave energy and inhibiting the development of the storm surge field on the shelf and along the coast.
The range of the estimated shear velocity during the passage of Hurricane Lili was 5-12.5 cm/s.

Science & Technology | Researchers study demise of hurricane
As Hurricane Lili churned toward landfall on the night of October 4, she had escalated from a Category 2 to a Category 4 storm and there was real concern that she might go all the way to the most dangerous level, a Category 5.
In the LSU Hurricane Center, state climatologist Jay Grymes, LSU oceanographer Greg Stone, and others were intently watching the storm, tracking it through the center’s instruments and supplying advice to state emergency officials in preparation for the big hit.
Hurricane models are no good if they can’t predict how the storm will behave, so Lili’s sudden drop in intensity generated a lot of interest.

Lili reached the coast as a category 2 hurricane with winds up to 100mph and a 1 to 3 metre storm surge.
But while Lili was certainly a powerful storm, authorities had expected something far worse.

Lafayette, LA-U.S. Geological Survey scientists are continuing to monitor the effects of Hurricane Lili, which slammed into the Louisiana coast Oct. 3, with winds in excess of 110 miles per hour.
In addition to hurricanes and storms, causes of land loss are natural subsidence and lack of marsh replenishment because of levees, he said.
