Hurst Castle is one of Henry VIII's Device Forts built at the end of a long shingle spit at the west end of the Solent to guard the approaches to Portsmouth.
Hurst Castle was sited at the narrow entrance to the Solent where the ebb and flow of the tides creates strong currents, putting would-be invaders at its mercy.
The castle is the closest point on the British mainland to the Isle of Wight, with Colwell Bay on the island lying less than two kilometres to the southeast.

At the centre of the castle is a 12 sided tower surrounded by three semi-circular bastions.
Extra gun batteries were added to the east and west in 1852 but were replaced between 1863 and 1870 by newer, much stronger west and east wings although the iron armour plating was not in place until 1874.

A visit to Hurst castle is a must, possibly combined with a cheap lunch at the cafe inside.
