  Tool Encyclopedia
A tool or device is a piece of equipment that most commonly provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a physical task.
Humans evolved an opposable thumb (useful to hold the tools) and an increase in intelligence (aiding in the use of tools).
Tool substitution may be divided broadly into two classes: substitution "by-design", or "multi-purpose", and substitution as make-shift.

 Jaws of Life
The Jaws of Life, or Hurst Tool, is a powered hydraulic mechanical spreading device originally developed by Hurst Performance and now under the registered trademark of Hale Products, Inc. It was invented in 1972 as an extrication tool for the race car industry and is now essential equipment in rescue, firefighting, and public safety operations.
The Jaws of Life includes two scissor-like aluminum alloy arms with tempered steel tips that may be provided with teeth to more fully engage the edges of the target object as the tool is operated.
The tool is used by powering the gasoline engine, placing the points of the arms into a seam in a vehicle or structure, and activating a valve switch, thus inducing hydraulic fluid to operate a piston that actuates the arms by means of a rod and linkages.

Hydraulic rescue tools - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hydraulic rescue tools are powered by a hydraulic pump, which can be hand-, foot-, or engine-powered, or even built into the tool itself.
These tools may be either single-acting, where hydraulic pressure will only move the cylinder in one direction, and the return to starting position is accomplished using a pressure-relief valve and spring setup, or dual-acting, in which hydraulic pressure is used to both open and close the hydraulic cylinder.
The hydraulic pump, attached to the tool or as a separate unit, powers a piston that pushes the blades apart with great force and spreads the seam.
