		I was impressed by Undset's insight into Kristin's fears of sins and her eventual realization of God's forgiveness; I'm a strong atheist, but Undset managed to impart a feeling for the consolation that Kristin finds without sounding maudline, an impressive achievement.
		Lavrans, who was the noblest character in the first book, gets an equally dignified end, dying slowly of an illness while supervising the preparations for his own funeral feast and bidding farewell to his friends and family.
