Changing Roles for Women in the 1950s
Ironically, despite the increasing success of this campaign to convince women to return to their more traditional roles, millions of married women in the 1950s continued to work, and millions more entered the workforce in the 1950s and 1960s.
In fact, from the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s there was tremendous pressure on women to accept their more traditional roles as wives and mothers, dependent on their husbands, and committed to living their lives for their families, children, and husbands.
Despite these growing changes in women's roles in the 1950s, Americans were told that while some wives might be working, their work wasn't important and it shouldn't get in the way of their responsibilities as wives and mothers.

The facts of wife: Remake of ‘Stepford Wives’ hits right satirical notes June 11, 2004
While the 1975 film (based on Ira Levin& book) was a nightmare born of the feminist movement, the 2004 film gets its power from the male backlash against powerful women and the husbands who are threatened by them.
Walter is welcomed into the men’s community, centered at the palatial Stepford Men’s Association where Mike Wellington (a vanilla-blond Walken) presides over the self-satisfied group of mostly nerdy husbands.
Director Frank Oz and screenwriter Paul Rudnick have transformed the 1975 thriller "The Stepford Wives" into the most outrageously funny film of the year.

Rigoletto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rigoletto, the hunchbacked jester of the Duke, mocks the husbands of the ladies to whom the prince is paying attention, and advises the prince to get rid of them by prison or death.
Based on the opera, the film chronicles the tragic fall of a cursed Wall Street second banana, Rick O'Lette.
Her father, the original Rigoletto, was really uncomfortable with the false hump he had to wear; he was so uncertain that, even though he was quite an experienced singer, he had a panic attack when it was his turn to enter the stage.

Dogme 95 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is speculated that much of the influence for the Dogme 95 concept derived from the films of legendary American director Woody Allen, specifically his film Husbands and Wives (1992).
The film garnered most of it's attention from some of the subject matter, which involved a relationship between Allen and a younger student (Juliette Lewis), a situation that mirrored very real events in his personal life.
Dogma was initiated to cause a stir and to make film makers and audiences re-think the art, effect and essence of film making.

Alexander says she can't really pinpoint what it is that's made her film so successful, but speculates that it may have something to do with "the amount of love that went into this film and the fact that because of the obstacles I was facing, I was forced to be very creative cinematically."
Some of the techniques Alexander is referring to are the use of a patterned curtain to silhouette the face of one of the women's husbands, showing only the hands or the hair or backs of another woman.
From a purely cinematic viewpoint, Alexander was faced with a daunting task - finding a way to have those in the documentary connect with the film-going public but knowing that at all times she could never reveal their faces, for fear of the backlash that might accompany them from their tight-knit community.

Woody Allen, who manages to attract big-name stars for his films, has employed the alphabetical technique on such films as ``Hannah and Her Sisters'' and ``Husbands and Wives.'' Of course, it doesn't hurt that his last name starts with A. Besides actors and directors, above-the-title billing can also be cluttered with companies and producers.
Billing - how the names of actors, directors, writers, producers, even companies, appear in ads and on the screen- has a long history in the movie business.
That's the industry's term for such billings as ``George Stevens' 'Shane''' or ``A film by Steven Spielberg,'' all designed to emphasize the director's contribution to the film.

Husbands and Wives, Singles explore relationships
Cameron Crowe's Singles is a film that sharply contrasts Husbands and Wives' attitudes.
Allen may have anticipated this criticism, because he provides an excuse late in the film: After Gabe lends Rain a manuscript of the novel which he is working on, she tells him that all of his characters are hyperbolic stereotypes, and Gabe counters that he merely exaggerated for comic effect.
The scariest scene of the film, involving a drunken Jack violently dragging Sam out of a party where she embarrassed him, was written chiefly for laughs.

Anatomy of a Kidnapping: Bruno Barreto's Four Days in September (Film Journal International, January 1998)
is an unusual film for Barreto whose previous work includes the classic Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1978), as well as Gabriella (1983), The Story of Fausta (1988), A Show of Force (1990) and seven other feature films, most of them stories about women.
The film is very loosely based on a memoir (O que e isso, companheiro?, not yet translated into English) by Fernando Gabeira, one of the kidnappers, who is now a liberal politician in Brazil.
Although this film includes a memorable female character -- Maria, played by the talented Fernanda Torres -- the story is told from the perspective of many characters who represent three distinctly different points of view.

La Habanera, the film’s ideological message is to provide women a harmless space for their fantasy of romance and a better life and to warn them against leaving their dutiful husbands, who in 1942 are likely enlisted in the army and concerned about the loyalty of their wives.
This film would certainly be lacking in ideological content were this vague analogy its only goal, especially given that the movie stated that the Rockefeller foundation, a foundation began by the world’s foremost capitalist, commissioned a health project to Puerto Rico with the goal of curing the fever.
Film is a safe way to both provide the illusion of desire fulfillment and to simultaneously contain the desires through ideological mechanisms.

The Austin Chronicle Screens: Video Reviews
After the box office successes of his earlier films -- Blind Husbands and Foolish Wives -- the director was reluctantly given the go-ahead by studio bosses, resulting in what is arguably the most literal transference of a novel ever into film.
The on-location filming in turn-of-the-century San Francisco is stunning, the squalid story unflinching, the downward spiral of a brutish dentist and his miserly wife after winning a $5,000 lottery as inevitable as the film's box-office failure with audiences.
Erich von Stroheim's 10-hour masterpiece-cum-folly, 1925's Greed, is the Holy Grail of silent film, a film which exists only in dusty script fragments, fading publicity stills, and the imaginations of dreamers.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Flesh Eating Mothers
The film is a simple splatter flick: In a small, anonymous town, the mothers all suddenly turn into cannibals, chewing apart their children and husbands.
Flesh Eating Mothers is so bad that no one involved with the film in any substantial way has ever made another movie since its release.
I'd say it's obvious that Flesh Eating Mothers is not intended to be taken seriously in any vein, but unfortunately it's not apparent that anyone involved with the production is actually in on the joke.

No Place for a Woman: The Femme Fatale
Moreover, there is clearly an impetus in film noir to transgress the boundaries of this circle; for the presence of husbands on crutches or in wheelchairs (Double Indemnity, Lady from Shanghai) suggests that impotence is somehow a normal component of the married state.
In the majority of noir films, however, the femme fatale remains committed to her independence, seldom allowing herself to be converted by the hero or captured by the police.
In the final scene of the film, the camera reveals the full visual power of the murdered femme fatale — the detective's entire apartment is filled with her photographs in a shrine to his obsession.

 Ararat (2002): Reviews
Ararat isn't a great film because it's too convoluted and personal at times, but it's a showcase of technical mastery; the way Egoyan interweaves the stories of the historical recreation, the relationship between the son and his stepsister and the mystery of the art historian's dead husbands, is endlessly compelling.
Maybe someday the Turks will produce a film maker of talent comparable to Egoyan, and maybe someday that person will create a film that tells the other side of the story in a manner that would be as interesting to watch as this film was.
Politically, the film opened my eyes to certain historical events of which I had previously not been aware.

Political Film Society - Surviving Paradise
For a filmviewer in Iran, the movie makes several powerful statements beyond the tagline "Reaching paradise is easy; survival is an art." The first revelation is that professional women in today’s Iran can defy their husbands.
The director believes that the adventure of the children is a metaphor for contemporary Iran’s search for itself, but the film also exposes why immigrants experience as paradise the opportunities in America, where newcomers are respected for contributing their customs and values.
But the content of the film, far more optimistic than the racial analysis contained in Grand Canyon (1992), belies his criticism of the City of Angels.

Many notable films have had their global or North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, including Chariots of Fire, The Big Chill, Husbands and Wives, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, Downfall, and Sideways.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is widely considered to be one of the top film festivals in the world and is the premiere film festival in North America which the Oscars race begins from.
The festival is considered a launch pad for many studios to begin "Oscar-buzz" for their films; for example, Taylor Hackford's Ray premiered at the festival and garnered much attention for Jamie Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles (for which he ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Actor).

Mystic River is a film that should have been made before the days when women had the right to vote, before they had entered the workforce, and before they had the ability to leave abusive husbands.
At the end of the film she is seen as a bubbling wreck, left with nothing but the knowledge that she will pay every day of her life for her supposed sins—a punishment sufficiently harsh to send a message to the women in the audience: Betray your husband and bad things will happen to you.
Mystic River is a film made by men and intended for women; if there’s one film an abusive husband would show his battered wife, it’s this one.
